A targeted brightening serum for dark spots, post-acne marks and uneven tone, built on three complementary pigment-focused actives rather than a single one. This matters, because pigmentation is produced through a multi-step biological pathway, and interrupting it at one point only is why most single-ingredient brightening products underperform.
Niacinamide sits second on the ingredient list — a meaningful position that indicates genuine concentration, not a token inclusion. It works by blocking the transfer of melanin from the melanocyte to the surrounding skin cells, so pigment that has been produced never reaches the surface where you would see it. Kojic acid works one step earlier, inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme that produces melanin in the first place. Turmeric root extract contributes antioxidant activity and calms the low-grade inflammation that drives pigmentation, particularly the post-inflammatory marks left behind by acne. A small amount of glycolic acid accelerates surface turnover so pigmented cells clear faster.
Four mechanisms, four points in the pathway. The texture is lightweight and fast-absorbing, and Medicube describe the formula as clinically tested for low irritation — which matters, because harsh brightening products cause the inflammation that creates more pigmentation.
Key ingredients
- Niacinamide (vitamin B3) — second on the ingredient list. Blocks melanin transfer to skin cells, supports the barrier, regulates sebum and reduces the appearance of pores. The most well-evidenced brightening ingredient available without a prescription.
- Kojic acid — derived from fermented rice, the same process that gives sake brewers famously pale hands. Inhibits tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in melanin production, addressing pigment at the source.
- Turmeric root extract (curcuma longa) — a potent antioxidant with anti-inflammatory activity. Particularly relevant for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, where the mark is a consequence of inflammation.
- Glycolic acid — the smallest AHA molecule, present at a low supporting level. Accelerates the shedding of pigmented surface cells so results appear sooner.
- Thioctic acid (alpha-lipoic acid) — an antioxidant unusual for being both water and fat soluble, allowing it to work throughout the skin. Delivered here in micro-capsules alongside squalane.
- Adenosine — a regulator-recognised functional anti-wrinkle active in Korea, working on the appearance of fine lines.
- Squalane and jojoba esters — lightweight emollients that keep the formula comfortable despite the acid content.
- Panthenol and allantoin — soothing and barrier-supporting, offsetting potential irritation from the actives.
- Holy basil, neem, eclipta and coral seaweed extracts — antioxidant and calming botanicals.
- Tocopherol (vitamin E) — antioxidant support that works synergistically with the others.
How to use
- Cleanse and apply toner or essence first.
- Dispense 2 to 3 drops onto clean fingertips. This is a treatment serum — more is not better, and using more only shortens the bottle.
- Distribute evenly across the face, then pat gently until absorbed. For targeted work, press an extra drop directly onto specific dark spots or post-acne marks.
- Allow 60 seconds to absorb.
- Follow with moisturiser.
- In the morning, always follow with SPF 50. See the note below — this is not optional.
Recommended frequency
- Standard use: once or twice daily, morning and evening.
- First-time users of kojic acid or acids generally: begin with evenings only, three or four times per week, for the first two weeks. Build to daily as tolerated.
- Sensitive skin: evenings only, every other day, and always over a well-hydrated base.
- With retinol: do not layer in the same routine. Use this serum in the morning and your retinol at night, or alternate evenings. Both together will almost certainly irritate.
- With vitamin C: this serum in the evening, vitamin C in the morning, is the cleanest arrangement.
- Timeline — read this before you buy. Pigmentation is the slowest concern in skincare to correct. Expect a subtle overall brightness at 3 to 4 weeks, visible fading of individual dark spots at 8 to 12 weeks, and meaningful change in stubborn melasma or older marks at 3 to 6 months of consistent daily use. Anyone promising faster is selling you something. Finish the bottle before judging it.
Best suited to
Post-acne marks and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Sun spots and age spots. Uneven or patchy tone. Dullness. Melasma, as a supporting treatment alongside professional advice. Also appropriate as a general tone-and-texture serum for anyone whose main complaint is that their skin looks tired rather than lined.
Complete the routine
This serum is the middle step of Medicube's three-part Kojic Acid Turmeric range, all of which we stock. The Resurfacing Toner preps and exfoliates first, this Serum delivers the concentrated actives, and the Kojic Acid Turmeric Pads provide a twice-weekly intensive treatment. Used as a system they target pigmentation at every stage of a routine; used individually each still works on its own.

Good to know
Daily broad-spectrum SPF 50 is mandatory with this product. This is not a general precaution — it is the condition under which the serum works at all. Kojic acid and glycolic acid both increase photosensitivity, and every minute of unprotected UV exposure stimulates the exact melanin production you are paying this serum to suppress. Using a brightening serum without daily sunscreen is spending money to run in place.
Kojic acid can be sensitising for a minority of users; patch test on the jawline for 24 hours before full-face use if your skin is reactive. Mild tingling on application is normal; persistent stinging, burning or redness is not — reduce frequency or discontinue. Avoid the immediate eye area. For external use only. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or being treated for melasma under medical supervision, consult your doctor before use. Store away from direct sunlight and heat, and close the bottle tightly — the antioxidants degrade with light and air exposure. Keep out of reach of children.
