Snail secretion filtrate is unusual in delivering several benefits from a single source: glycoproteins and proteoglycans that support the skin's repair processes, glycosaminoglycans and naturally occurring hyaluronic acid for hydration, allantoin for soothing, a trace of glycolic acid for gentle renewal, and copper peptides associated with firmness. Around it sits a three-part rice complex — rice seed water, rice extract and rice ferment filtrate (sake) — the traditional Korean brightening system.

Essence versus cream: what the difference actually is

An essence is a lightweight, watery treatment applied early in a routine, straight onto damp skin after cleansing and toning. It is designed for delivery — thin enough to absorb quickly and to be layered two or three times. A cream is thicker and designed for sealing — holding everything beneath it in place and reducing water loss through the day or night.

How to use

1. Cleanse and apply toner. Do not let the skin dry fully — essences work best applied to slightly damp skin, which improves absorption and gives the humectants water to bind.
2. Dispense 3 to 4 drops, or two pumps, into clean palms.
3. Press and pat into the skin rather than rubbing. Work outward from the centre of the face.
4. Allow 30 seconds to absorb.
5. Follow with serum, then moisturiser — ideally the matching SEOUL 1988 snail cream — and sunscreen in the morning.

The layering method

For dehydrated skin, apply two or three thin layers rather than one thick one, patting each in and waiting 20 to 30 seconds between them. Thin repeated layers hydrate considerably better than a single heavy application — this is the principle behind the Korean "7-skin" method, and it works.

As a soothing compress

Saturate two cotton pads, split them, and lay them over irritated or red areas for 5 minutes. Useful after sun exposure, after shaving, or on a day when the skin feels reactive.

Recommended frequency

• Standard use: twice daily, morning and evening, after cleansing and toning.
• Dehydrated or dull skin: twice daily, using the two-to-three-layer method each time.
• Oily and acne-prone skin: twice daily. Lightweight, non-comedogenic hydration is what oily skin usually needs and rarely gets.
• Alongside retinoids or acids: excellent on recovery nights and the mornings after. The repair-supporting and soothing properties are precisely what irritated skin wants.
• Post-procedure — after microneedling, peels or laser, once cleared by your practitioner: twice daily, patted gently.
• Timeline: immediate plumping and comfort. Improvements in texture, post-acne marks and overall tone typically become visible at 4 to 8 weeks.

Good to know

This product contains snail secretion filtrate and is therefore not vegan. Cosmetic snail mucin is collected without harming the animals — gathered from snails moving over mesh surfaces in controlled conditions, then purified and sterilised — but it remains an animal-derived ingredient, and we prefer to say so plainly.
