A retinol serum designed around a single principle: deliver a properly effective dose of vitamin A while removing everything that normally makes retinol difficult to tolerate. Retinol at 0.08% — a genuine working concentration, openly declared on the ingredient list rather than hidden behind a marketing name — is paired with bakuchiol, ceramide NP, black rice extract and fermented actives, in a completely unscented formula.

The declared percentage matters. A great many retinol products state no concentration at all, which makes it impossible to know whether you are buying a treatment or a moisturiser with a claim on the box. Haruharu Wonder publish theirs, and place retinol in the middle of the ingredient list where 0.08% would be expected. That is verifiable honesty, and it is rarer than it should be.

The second half of the design is what surrounds the retinol. Bakuchiol sits seventh on the ingredient list — high enough to be doing real work, not a token inclusion. It produces retinoid-like effects on lines and firmness through an entirely different mechanism, so the two actives reinforce each other without compounding irritation. Underneath both, ceramide NP rebuilds the barrier that retinoids disrupt, and a fermented black rice and ginseng base delivers antioxidant and brightening support.

Key ingredients

  • Retinol, 0.08% — the most rigorously evidenced anti-ageing ingredient available without a prescription. Increases cell turnover, supports collagen, and works on fine lines, texture, tone and pore appearance. 0.08% is a moderate, effective concentration — meaningful for a first serious retinol, comfortable for ongoing use.
  • Bakuchiol — seventh on the list, indicating substantial concentration. A plant-derived compound repeatedly compared to retinol for its effect on photoageing, working through a different pathway and tolerated well by sensitive skin. Running the two together is the smartest thing about this formula.
  • Black rice extract (2,000 ppm) — the signature ingredient of the Haruharu Wonder range. Rich in anthocyanins, the same antioxidant pigments that make the rice black, alongside vitamin E and ferulic acid. The brand builds its formulas on rice ferment rather than plain water wherever possible.
  • Bamboo shoot bark extract (1,000 ppm) — hydrating and soothing, high in silica.
  • Ceramide NP — direct barrier lipid replacement. Its presence in a retinol serum is deliberate and welcome: retinoids compromise the barrier, and building the repair into the same product reduces the dryness and flaking that make people quit.
  • Aspergillus ferment — a fermented active supporting bioavailability and skin conditioning.
  • Panax ginseng root extract — antioxidant and revitalising; a cornerstone of Korean skincare tradition.
  • Adenosine — a regulator-recognised functional anti-wrinkle active in Korea.
  • Sunflower seed oil and caprylic/capric triglyceride — lightweight emollients that keep the serum comfortable and help solubilise the retinol.
  • Cyclodextrin — a molecular cage that helps stabilise the retinol against degradation.

How to use

  1. Evening use only. Retinol degrades under UV light and increases photosensitivity.
  2. Cleanse and tone, then wait until the skin is completely dry — ideally 10 to 20 minutes. Applying retinol to damp skin drives it in faster and increases irritation.
  3. Dispense 2 to 3 drops for the full face.
  4. Distribute evenly and pat gently. Avoid the immediate eye area, the corners of the nose and the corners of the mouth.
  5. Follow with a barrier moisturiser after two to three minutes.
  6. For sensitive skin, use the buffering method — moisturiser first, serum on top — while building tolerance.
  7. SPF 50 the following morning is mandatory.

Recommended frequency

  • New to retinol: twice weekly for weeks 1–2, three times weekly for weeks 3–4, every other night in month two, nightly from month three if comfortable. Do not rush this. The people who fail with retinol are almost always the ones who started nightly.
  • Experienced retinol users: every other night, building to nightly.
  • Sensitive skin: two or three times per week, buffered, indefinitely. Nightly use is not a goal in itself.
  • Do not layer in the same routine with AHAs, BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, high-strength vitamin C or another retinoid. Alternate evenings.
  • Pause three to five days either side of waxing, threading, peels, microneedling or laser.
  • Timeline: smoother texture and improved radiance at 4 to 8 weeks. Visible change in fine lines and firmness at 12 weeks and beyond. Retinol is slow. It is also the ingredient with the strongest evidence behind it, which is why the wait is worth it.

The retinisation period

Mild dryness, light flaking and slight redness during the first two to four weeks are normal as the skin adjusts its turnover rate. Support with a barrier cream and reduce frequency rather than stopping. Persistent burning, painful stinging, swelling or raw patches are not normal — stop, repair for two weeks, and restart less often.

Where this sits among our retinoids

We stock a full retinoid range, and the differences are worth understanding — they are not a simple ladder, because different vitamin A derivatives are not directly comparable by percentage alone.

  • SEOUL 1988 Retinal Cream — 0.01% retinaldehyde, liposome-encapsulated, in a rich cream base. Retinaldehyde is considerably more potent per unit than retinol, so despite the lower number this sits in a broadly similar range — but the encapsulation and cream format make it the gentlest introduction we sell.
  • This serum — 0.08% retinol plus high-dose bakuchiol, unscented, with ceramide support. A serum format layers more flexibly, and the unscented formula makes it our recommendation for anyone with fragrance sensitivity.
  • Dr. Althea Pure Retinol 0.15% Cream — roughly double the retinol concentration here. The step up for those already tolerating retinol comfortably.
  • Beauty of Joseon Revive Eye Patch, Ginseng + Retinal — targeted eye-area treatment, used alongside rather than instead of the above.

Best suited to

Fine lines, uneven texture, enlarged-looking pores, dullness and early loss of firmness. Anyone ready to move beyond a beginner retinoid. Particularly recommended for fragrance-sensitive skin — a genuinely unscented retinol serum is difficult to find. Also suitable as a first retinol for those who prefer a serum to a cream.

Important safety information

Do not use if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. Topical vitamin A derivatives are routinely avoided during pregnancy as a precaution. Bakuchiol-only products are the usual alternative and we are happy to advise.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF 50 is required throughout use. Avoid the immediate eye area. Do not apply to broken, sunburned, waxed or actively inflamed skin. Introduce gradually as set out above. If you use prescription tretinoin, adapalene or isotretinoin, consult your dermatologist before adding this. For external use only. Store away from light and heat with the cap firmly closed — retinol oxidises on exposure to air and light, and an oxidised retinol serum is an inactive one. Use within 6 months of opening. Keep out of reach of children.

Pair with a barrier repair cream. Our COSRX Skin Barrier Moisturizing Cream is also fragrance-free, making it the ideal partner for this serum.
