A pure mineral sunscreen — zinc oxide as the sole UV filter, with no chemical filters at all. Zinc oxide is second on the ingredient list, and it is the only single filter that covers the entire UV spectrum on its own: UVB, UVA II and UVA I. Everything else in the formula is there to make wearing it pleasant.

Mineral sunscreens work differently from chemical ones. Rather than absorbing UV radiation and converting it to heat, zinc oxide sits on the surface of the skin and reflects and scatters it. Nothing penetrates, nothing converts, nothing degrades in sunlight. That makes it the most photostable protection available and the gentlest option for skin that reacts to everything else.

Haruharu Wonder build the rest of the formula the way they build everything — around fermented black rice, with rice bran oil at 9,950 ppm (close to one percent), niacinamide, ceramide NP, phytosphingosine and heartleaf extract. It is a sunscreen that also supports the barrier, which matters because the people who need mineral filters usually have a compromised one.

Key ingredients

  • Zinc oxide (sole UV filter) — the broadest-spectrum single filter available. Inherently photostable, non-irritating, and mildly antibacterial and anti-inflammatory in its own right, which is why dermatologists reach for it on reactive and acne-prone skin.
  • Rice bran oil (9,950 ppm) — the second-largest active presence in the formula. Rich in vitamin E, gamma-oryzanol and ferulic acid; nourishing and antioxidant, and the reason this mineral sunscreen does not feel dry.
  • Fermented black rice extract — the signature of the Haruharu Wonder range. Rich in anthocyanins, the antioxidant pigments that make the rice black.
  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3) — barrier support, tone evening and sebum regulation.
  • Ceramide NP and phytosphingosine — skin-identical barrier lipids built directly into a sunscreen. Uncommon, and genuinely useful.
  • Houttuynia cordata (heartleaf) extract — a well-established Korean soothing botanical, used for redness and reactive skin.
  • Chickweed, daisy flower, sunflower flower and lingonberry extracts — antioxidant and calming support.
  • Moringa seed oil — a stable, oxidation-resistant emollient.
  • Sodium hyaluronate and glycerin — hydration, offsetting the drying tendency mineral filters can have.
  • Tocopherol (vitamin E) — antioxidant protection against free radicals generated by UV exposure.

An honest word about white cast

Zinc oxide is a white mineral. Any pure mineral sunscreen will leave some degree of white cast — that is physics, not formulation failure, and any brand claiming a zero-cast mineral filter is overstating it. This formula is well dispersed and the cast is moderate, settling within a few minutes into a sheer satin finish. On light and medium skin tones most people find it entirely acceptable. On deeper skin tones the cast will be more visible.

If a completely invisible finish is your priority, our Benton Air Fit or COSRX Vitamin E sunscreens use chemical filters and leave no cast at all. If your skin reacts to chemical filters, or you want the gentlest option available, the trade-off is worth it.

How to use

  1. Apply as the final step of your morning skincare routine, after moisturiser and before makeup.
  2. Use the correct amount: two finger-lengths along the index and middle fingers, or roughly a quarter-teaspoon for the face. Under-applying is the single most common reason sunscreen fails — SPF is measured at 2 mg per square centimetre and most people use a fraction of that.
  3. Dot across the face, then spread and massage until absorbed. Mineral sunscreen needs slightly more working-in than chemical — take the extra fifteen seconds to blend it properly, especially along the jaw and hairline.
  4. Extend down the neck and over the ears.
  5. Allow 15 minutes to settle before makeup or sun exposure. Unlike chemical filters, mineral protection is effective immediately on application — the wait is for cosmetic settling, not activation.

Recommended frequency

  • Every morning, year-round. UVA passes through cloud and window glass at near-constant levels across the seasons.
  • Reapply every 2 hours during sustained outdoor exposure, and immediately after swimming, sweating heavily or towel-drying.
  • Indoors, office-based day: one morning application is generally enough.
  • Over makeup: use a mineral sunscreen stick or powder SPF rather than layering cream over foundation.
  • Post-procedure — after peels, microneedling or laser, once cleared by your practitioner: mineral is the recommended filter type during healing.
  • Mandatory if you use actives — retinol, retinal, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs or kojic acid all increase photosensitivity.

Who should choose mineral over chemical

  • Sensitive, reactive or rosacea-prone skin — zinc oxide is the least irritating filter available.
  • Anyone who stings or reacts to chemical sunscreens, particularly around the eyes.
  • Pregnancy — mineral filters are the conventional choice when avoiding chemical absorption.
  • Post-procedure and healing skin.
  • Acne-prone skin — zinc oxide has mild antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Children and teenagers.

Good to know

This is not a water-resistant sunscreen and is not intended for swimming or sport — use a dedicated water-resistant product for prolonged water exposure. Zinc oxide can be slightly drying on very dry skin; apply over a well-hydrating moisturiser if needed. For external use only. Avoid direct contact with the eyes. Discontinue use if irritation develops. Store below 25°C and away from direct sunlight — do not leave in a hot car. Replace 12 months after opening. Keep out of reach of children.
