The vitamin C complex — ascorbic acid with ascorbyl glucoside and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid — pairs the immediately active form with two more stable derivatives that convert in the skin. Vitamin C inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that initiates melanin production, and neutralises free radicals generated by UV and pollution. Glutathione acts further down the pigment pathway, favouring lighter pigment. Niacinamide completes the sequence by limiting transfer of finished pigment into surrounding cells. Ceramide NP and panthenol keep a vitamin C product from becoming drying, while centella asiatica and portulaca oleracea provide the soothing counterweight.

A mist earns its place by being usable when a serum is not — over makeup, on a plane, in an air-conditioned office. This one absorbs without stickiness.

5. Follow with moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning.

Good to know

Ascorbic acid in a water-based formula is prone to oxidation. Keep the bottle out of direct sunlight and away from heat, and use it within a few months of opening; a mist that has turned distinctly yellow or brown has oxidised and should be replaced. Vitamin C can sting on a compromised barrier or straight after exfoliation, so leave time between an acid step and this. Patch test if you have reacted to vitamin C before, and avoid the eyes.
